The mining town of Roros is situated more than 600 meters above sea level. It is one of UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. In the 17th century the area's copper mine brought great wealth to some but not all the residents. Wehn Peder Hiort died he bequeathed his entire fortune to establish a foundation in order to educate and train the impoverished residents of Roros. This created the tradition of handcraft, textile production and philanthropic aspect that Roros Tweed is founded upon.
