These stoneware mugs are manufactured in Gifu Prefecture, a region in Japan that’s considered to be the country’s center for ceramics and known for its long history of pottery making. (Earthenware pieces dating back to around the 7th century were discovered there, as well as early tea ceremony pieces.) The cup molds are machine made in the factory. Once molded, the vessels are left to air dry before being bisque fired at 800°C for six hours, during which time the clay becomes a ceramic material. The craftspeople at the company have more than 25 years experience, drawing on traditional techniques passed down from previous generations, and inspect each piece for any minor flaws. They then apply an even glaze prior to a final firing. The cups are looked over one last time to ensure uniform quality. The product passes through the hands of seven craftspeople before arriving in your home.
Hand wash only. The cups are not dishwasher safe. A soft sponge is recommended for cleaning since crackle glaze is more delicate than regular ceramic glazes. Microwave safe.
The company that makes these stoneware cups takes its inspiration from a beehive, a place in which dedicated, detail oriented people work together toward a common goal.
Featuring an earthenware bottom and crackle glaze finish, these stoneware cups fit comfortably in your hand. Made in Japan since 1980. Comes in 6 ounces and 8 ounces.
