Using clay sourced from North America and blended onsite, these stoneware mugs are hand dried and fired. The individual molds are cast in plaster then filled with liquid clay known as “slip,” forming the wall of the mug as the mold starts to absorb the water. Once the mug has fully dried, its seams are cleaned with a knife and smoothed with a sponge before the piece is dipped into a clear glaze. The last step: eight hours in a gas-fueled kiln fired at 2,200 °F, producing vibrant colors.
This lead-free mug is safe for use in the microwave and dishwasher.
This Virginia-based ceramics maker was inspired by early American pottery techniques when it first launched in 1977. Each piece is handmade onsite by a small team of artisans and therefore unique. The founders developed a method of applying natural pigments with a Japanese brush to their more ornate housewares, which are painted without stencils or templates.
This stoneware mug has a nice weight and fits comfortably in your hand, thanks to its organic texture and shape, featuring a slightly curved lip for easy sipping. Made in Virginia since 1977. Also available in Natural.
