why this product

Handcrafted from the finest quality Brazilian soapstone, this soapstone casserole dish embodies the raw beauty of nature combined with clean, modern design. The mineral composition of each stone varies slightly, resulting in diverse veining, speckling, and coloration that make each piece truly unique. The copper ring that circles the pot has sturdy copper handles, adding a warm tone to the deep gray shade of the soapstone, which will darken to near-black once the dish is seasoned. Casserole dishes are one of a cook’s most versatile tools, perfect for everything from stews, soups, roasts, sautés, and both savory and sweet casseroles. The striking design easily transitions from oven to table.

Soapstone cookware has been used for centuries, dating all the way back to the Stone Age. Touted for both its versatility and beauty, early civilizations discovered that the material made an ideal cooking surface due to the extraordinary heat conducting properties it contained. Stoneware has the ability to retain heat twice as long as traditional metal cookware. These characteristics make soapstone gentle on the environment, as less energy is required to heat the cookware through and keep it hot. Stoneware also allows for food to be cooked more integrally than other types of cookware, retaining the taste, texture, and nutrients in each ingredient. Soapstone is bacteria-resistant and naturally non-stick, making it a healthy choice for those who cook with little to no oil.

use & care

Soapstone is a low-maintenance material that requires an initial treatment and then very little care after that.

Initial treatment: Place the pot and cover in a 180°C/356°F oven for 15 minutes to dry off the natural moisture of the stone and prep it to receive an oil treatment. Remove the dish from the oven, taking care to not place it on a cold surface. Grease the entire interior and exterior of the roasting dish, as well as the lid, with seed oil (such as unrefined flax, sunflower, safflower or walnut oil). Fill the dish with room temperature water and place it – with the lid on – on the stovetop over the lowest possible flame. Allow the water to come to a boil and continue the boil for at least two hours. (The water keeps the pot moist while it is being seasoned). Turn off the flame off and let the cookware cool to room temperature. Once completely cool, wash the dish to remove any excess oil.

The initial treatment will not only ready the casserole dish for use, but also darken it from gray to light black.

The soapstone pot and lid can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. Cracking or breaking can be prevented by not exposing your roasting dish to thermal shock, which happens when a hot dish is placed on a cold surface or filled with cold water. Always heat the roasting dish slowly on a low flame and then allow it to cool completely before washing or placing it on a cold surface. Small scratches can easily be removed with regular sandpaper or a dab of oil.

Soapstone cookware is suitable for use on gas and electric stovetops.

production & design

This soapstone cookware was handcrafted by Cookstone, a Brazilian maker. The raw materials for the cookware are sourced directly from Brazilian mines; often the pieces chosen are remnants from larger blocks in order to reduce resource waste. Each pot is formed from a piece of soapstone that a highly skilled craftsperson turns on a horizontal mechanical lathe. Once shaped, the cookware is then passed on to another artisan who fits and applies the copper detailing and handles. This process allows for customization in size and finish, while highlighting the unique nature of each piece of cookware.
