The briefcase design of this leather backpack was inspired by the pouch-like bags that can be spotted in Ecuador which leather craftsman Andrew McAteer combined with a pattern adapted from a 1901 British Navy Ammunition pouch. The refined bag is as well-suited to carrying essentials on adventures abroad as it is bringing a laptop and files to the office. This bag is made of two types of leather, a thick, high-grade vegetable-tanned leather, for the outer panels and straps, and a supple an oil-tanned leather used for the gussets and interior pocket. This softer leather will expand with use, as the bag forms to the objects you carry with you each day. A inner divider keeps documents safe, and an interior pocket is sized to hold a passports or mobile phones. Two brass turn-button studs keep the exterior flap of the bag securely closed. The adjustable belt-style straps are attached with brass rivets that allow movement, so the bag can be custom fit to your body, while ensuring that the weight you carry is evenly balanced. A handle at the top of the bag makes it easy to grab from a plane’s overhead storage or to carry by your side if you wish.
Care for the leather by conditioning periodically with neatsfoot oil or wax as well as our Beeswax Leather Conditioner. Keep away from moisture and direct sunlight to prevent cracking.
An intrepid traveler, Andrew McAteer found that the available bags, carriers and accessories on the market didn't properly suit his on-the-go gear requirements, so he began to design and make his own goods. Working out of a small workshop in Astoria, New York, Andrew creates products that he needs and, by extension, that others might also find useful. To make this backpack, a pattern is hand cut out of the leather hides—the vegetable-tanned hides are from Maine and the leather used for the gusset and pockets are oil-tanned in Mexico. The sections are then stitched together, and the English brass rivets and hardware are attached. Finally, American-made turn-button studs are secured on the front flap and the mark of the maker is stamped into the interior pocket.
