Invented in 1939, these durable fluted Duralex glass tumblers have a nostalgic history that follows a lifetime of dining: at one time, the glasses were standard issue in almost every grade school cafeteria, and, as one’s eating habits graduated, the glasses were de rigueur in most French bistros. Suitable for use by both young and old, the glass is elegantly shaped but extremely durable. If dropped and broken, the tumbler will break into chunks that can easily be cleaned up as opposed to sharp, dangerous shards. Due to the tempering process, the tumbler is two and a half times stronger than conventional glass. In a process similar to creating car windshields, the glass is heated to extremely high temperatures of 1292°F (700°C) and then dramatically and quickly cooled. A chemical reaction occurs that greatly improves resistance against thermal shock and physical impact. The tempering process creates glassware with a higher tolerance against chips, cracks and breakage that may safely be used for hot and cold beverages.
Safe for use in freezer, microwave and dishwasher. Manufactured to withstand sudden temperature extremes from -4°F (-20°C) to 266°F (130°C) and suitable for hot or cold liquids. The unique, iconic, fluted shape makes the glasses easy to stack and store.
Established in 1939, Duralex grew to great acclaim as a producer of strong, tempered glass in classic, elegant designs. On the fringes of La Chapelle Saint-Mesmin in central France, the company occupies a sprawling factory that houses an oven the size of a city block. Here, Duralex glasses and other tempered glass kitchenware are turned out from a blend of sand, lime and aluminum-oxide. Once cooled, the glass is dropped into freezing water to catalyze the process that fortifies and strengthens the material.
