Copper is an essential trace element that is naturally occurring in soil, and tools made from the metal are beneficial for enriching your garden and may even deter pests (slugs and snails in particular are repelled by copper, as the metal reacts to their slime and transmits an electric shock). This garden claw is made up of 94% pure copper with a trace of tin for strength. One blacksmith is responsible for cutting, soldering, welding, grinding and polishing the metal, which is then attached to a turned beech wood handle. The five-pronged design easily rakes through dirt for planting seedlings, aerating soil or removing small weeds and grasses.
Copper does not rust or corrode, though it may earn a unique patina over time. If desired, polish the copper to return the claw to its original sheen. Learn more about caring for copper here. Store the claw inside in a dry place. The claw is designed specifically for established garden plots and loose soils only. It is not suitable for cultivating rough terrain, shrubs and roots, or for use on very stony soils. The copper is malleable and can be easily bent or hammered back into shape, reworked and sharpened without danger of breaking. Avoid prolonged direct exposure to sunlight. The claw do not require cleaning, but be sure to keep the wooden handle dry to prevent cracking.
In the 1950s, forester, naturalist, author and inventor Viktor Schauberger (1885-1958) conducted experiments in which he observed that copper farming tools were beneficial over the use of iron ploughs, whose rust (iron oxide) reduced the moisture and fertility of soil. Carrying this tradition forward, PKS Bronze was founded by John Stadler in 1995. PKS Bronze’s logo, which resembles a spiral staircase or a nautilus shell, is based upon Viktor Schauberger’s diagram of the Hyperbolic Open System. This concept suggests that manmade systems should be modeled after nature’s spiraling tendencies, such as the natural flow of water, in order for them to have for maximum efficiency.
