Each of these naturally scented candles are hand-poured by Erika and Pete Panciera at their home studio in the costal city of Encinitas, California. The fragrances are created to evoke a sense of place, and are inspired by adventures the couple experienced while traveling. This product was designed to last long after the candle has burned away, as the stoneware vessel can be repurposed in many ways. Use it as a coffee cup, pen holder, or plant pot. This candle is poured into a matte white vessel with a matte bone glaze. Named Idyllwild after the mountain-top community that hovers over the shifting sands of the California desert near Joshua Tree National Park, this fragrance is redolent of cedarwood and sagebrush. Those two scents are grounded with earthy vetiver tones and highlighted with a bright citrus note.
The first time you burn the candle, make sure to keep it lit for two to three hours. This helps ensure even melting, which prevents cored burning, wasted candle wax and an ineffective wick. Each time you light the candle, let it burn long enough so the wax pool can melt as close to the edge of the container as possible. If you let your candle burn for more than four hours at a time, an excessive pool of melted wax may put out the flame. Keep the wick trimmed to about ¼ inch to prevent smoking. Optimal room temperature for the candles is 70° Fahrenheit. If you light your candle in a cold room, the wax pool will not melt all the way to the edges of the container. Chilly stoneware can change how the candle burns drastically, so the candle is best kept out of drafts and wind. Once the candle has fully burned away, simply wash the stoneware with hot water and soap. Then begin to use the stoneware in the kitchen as a drinking glass or mug; in the bathroom as a toothbrush holder; around the house for holding utensils or freshly cut flowers; or in the garden for planting succulents or seedlings.
Erika and Pete Panciera began making candles to brighten their own home while living New York City. When a local barbershop heard about these handmade lights, they put in a large order, and the line of candles was born. The name Norden references Erika’s Nordic heritage, and the candles are made in Pete’s native Southern California, where the couple relocated. To create the candles, Erika and Pete first experiment by blending essential oils and trapping the scents with perfume strips and glass bottles. The scents are allowed to mingle for a week or longer, while Erika and Pete check in on the longevity of the fragrance and the sensory experience it is creating. If successful, the essential oil blend is then added to soy wax that has been melted to specific temperatures. Each candle is hand-poured by Erika or Pete into stoneware vessels made by a ceramicist who works just two miles down the road from their studio.
