The shape of these planters is based on the traditional terracotta vessel, but a polished brass finish creates a wholly modern take. The sheen of the metal makes the planter a perfect place to spotlight a special orchid, or just the right receptacle to elevate a humble cactus.
Award-winning designer Monica Forster designed these shiny planters and entrusted the fabrication to a 400-year-old foundry in Sweden. Each pot is formed through a process called metal spinning. Large sheets of brass are spun at high speed, then worked and shaped into the final object. This unique process allows a perfect replica of traditional terracotta pot to be formed, right down to the slight incline on the base.
This clever planter can be used as a cachepot (a decorative covering for already potted plants), by slipping the clay pots straight into the brass planter. Or you can settle the soil directly within the brass walls.
Use a mild metal polish and a soft cloth to keep the brass shining bright. If resting the pot on delicate surfaces, consider place a tray or other protective barrier underneath it. Extended exposure to water can increase the possibility of tarnishing, which does not affect the integrity of the planter, but rather gives it a pleasing patina.
In 1609 King Charles IX of Sweden created the Skultuna brass foundry to make ornate chandeliers for the Swedish crown. Since brass is made from copper and zinc, the foundry is strategically situated near copper mines about 75 miles west of Stockholm. Chandelier production continues at Skultuna today, and the foundry also collaborates with renowned contemporary product designers to create brass objects such as these planters and our polished brass tealight holders.
