A third-generation woodworker fashioned this tapered rolling pin by hand out of black walnut in her Nashville, Tennessee, woodshop. The rolling pin is the classic tool used by French pastry chefs to roll out thin, uniform circles of pie or tart dough—the tapered, handle-free design allows for greater control, and the pin can be pivoted to manipulate dough into almost-perfect rounds. Its lightweight maneuverability means that it can also be used to roll out quick sugar cookie dough or press out a rustic tart crust.
Wash with a gentle soap and dry immediately. Condition with a food-safe wax or mineral oil as necessary.
Emily Brock is the third-generation woodworker behind the Board & Bread woodshop; her great-grandfather was a staircase maker and her father sculpts wood furniture. Emily carries on the family tradition of woodworking with items for food, eating and the kitchen.
