This almost 200-year-old copper manufacturer prides itself in creating historically accurate wares, and this flask was inspired by the aesthetic of traditional copper stills (copper removes the unpleasant tasting sulfur-based compounds from alcohol) and the flasks carried by American settlers of the 19th-century. The flask is lined with tin on the interior so you can fill it with the liquor of your choice, without worrying about the acidity eroding the copper. A machined, leak-proof, copper screw cap ensures that every drop ends up where it belongs. If cared for properly, the makers intend for these flasks to become family heirlooms.
Hand wash with soap and water. Never place in dishwasher. Copper is a metal that will not rust, as long as it is not exposed to acids. Over time and with regular use, the copper will change in color and surface texture. This is not damage, but simply the copper molecules settling in and getting comfortable. This naturally occurring patina will develop over time to create a one-of-a-kind finish. If you prefer to restore the original copper sheen, you can polish up the flask with a soft cloth and cleaning solution. Read more about how to do this here. Acid corrodes copper, therefore, the inside is hot-tinned so that you may fill it with any liquor of your choosing. If you want to clean the inside of your tin-lined copper cup, rinse with warm water and mild soap, then dry thoroughly. Each flask is individually made, so imperfections are expected and contribute to the uniqueness of your handmade vessel.
This metalworking company is careful to adhere to the same standards of materials and fabrication set almost 200 years ago at its founding in 1819. The process begins with copper sheets, which are sheared to size, then blanked or cut, by hand into individual parts. For the flask there are four parts: the body, the bottom, the top and the neck. Before the pieces are formed, they are hot tinned on the inside, a process that coats the copper with a layer of tin and makes it resistant to corrosion, as well as food and water safe. After the hot-tinning, the four parts are formed using a mallet that bangs the copper piece against a steel tool until it meets its proper shape. The pieces are then soldered together. Capping off the process, the copper screw top is machined for a precise, leak-proof fit.
