This bottle opener is made from recycled iron in Syracuse, New York, by a company that uses traditional casting processes that have been updated to decrease consumption. Their melting furnaces are heated to 3,000°F (1,650°C) using vegetable oil that would have otherwise gone to refuse. All of their products are made with 100% recycled iron. The iron is seasoned with flaxseed oil, which is naturally food-safe. The molecules of the flaxseed oil bond to each other to form a tough, protective film over the iron.
Tips for caring for your bottle opener:
Avoid soaking the bottle opener or leaving it in the sink, as it may rust.
If needed, wash the bottle opener by hand using hot water and a sponge or stiff brush. Thoroughly dry the bottle opener after cleaning.
Store the bottle opener in a dry place.
In 2011, iron foundry Borough Furnace was founded by Liz Seru and John Trussex. Their furnace, called a Skilletron, operates on waste vegetable oil to process metals more cleanly than the typical, high-polluting coal-fueled furnace. Seru and Trussex also use only scrap iron to make their cast iron products.
