According to this almost 200-year old copperwares manufacturer, cowboys of the American frontier in the late 1800s would mosey into saloons to trade bullet cartridges for a sip of liquor served in a jigger. Canal diggers along the rivers of the American frontier would also be rewarded with a small dose of alcohol. The word “shot” also connotes a small, potent amount. Whatever the tale may be, these copper shot glasses marry history and myth with a fluted design exclusive to Kaufmann Mercantile. Made of pure, unlined copper, the shot glasses are reminiscent of traditional alcohol stills, typically made of copper due to the material’s ability to remove the unpleasant tasting sulfur-based compounds from alcohol. They are stackable for convenient storage.
To clean, rinse with warm water and mild soap, then dry thoroughly. Copper is a metal that will not rust or corrode, as long as it is not exposed to acids. Because these shot glasses are not lined, we do not recommend serving anything other than alcohol in them. Over time and with regular use, the shot glasses will change in color and surface texture. This is not damage, but simply the copper molecules settling in and getting comfortable. The naturally occurring patina will develop over time to create a one-of-a-kind finish. If you prefer to restore the original copper sheen, you can polish up the shot glasses with a soft cloth and cleaning solution. Read more about how to do this here. Note: High heat is an enemy of copper and should be avoided.
This metalworking company is careful to adhere to the same standards of materials and fabrication set almost 200 years ago by its founder. The shot glasses are created in a process called metal turning or metal spinning. Pieces of metal — in this case, copper — are spun and turned on a lathe at high speeds. A forming block pushes against the material as it spins to create symmetrical, round and tubular items.
