The inspiration behind the Todd Snyder x Champion sweatshirt began in the Champion archives, where the company’s chief design officer, Ned Munroe, and design director, Joanne Sessler, poured over vintage catalogues and samples alongside Todd Snyder. The collaboration between the two brands was a seamless fit, thanks to Snyder’s experience with classic American tailoring at fashion heavyweights such as Ralph Lauren and J Crew – and Champion’s heritage of using athletic fabrics and fits to create a streamlined aesthetic.
This 100% cotton sweatshirt is made in a small, family-owned factory in Canada. The garments are finished using “flat-lock” machines that are more than 50 years old. Because they slow down production times considerably compared to their more modern “over-lock” counterparts, the majority of these machines have disappeared from factories. However, the flat lock creates a much stronger and comfortable seam. (As the name suggests, the stitch is flat.)
The sweatshirt features one breast pocket and a cloth label, inspired by some of the first to be sewn onto Champion’s active wear back in the 1920s.
We recommend that your sweatshirt be machine washed on the “cold wash/cold rinse” cycle, then tumble dried on “low” or line dried.
Champion was founded as the Knickerbocker Knitting Company in 1919, later changing its name to Champion Knitting Mills. The innovative company introduced design details such as the raised lettering on college active wear, hooded and zip-up sweatshirts, as well as reverse weave t-shirts that resisted shrinkage after being washed.
Menswear designer Todd Snyder developed his expertise at labels such Ralph Lauren, Gap and J Crew before launching his own line in 2011. After presenting his third collection the following year, the Iowa native was named one of the Best New Menswear Designers by GQ magazine and nominated for the CFDA Swarovski Menswear Award. His success has just a hint of destiny: Snyder in Dutch translates as “one who makes outer garments.”
