In the late 18th century, according to local yore, a priest on the Japanese island of Miyajima was inspired to make a rice scoop based on the shape of a traditional Biwa (Japanese lute). He enlisted the help of the carpenters and woodworkers in charge of building the island’s ornate temples and shrines. Today, Miyajima is renowned for its wood rice scoops, which are thought to carry good luck. Each piece is still planed by hand. The cherry birch butter knife and jam spatula grew from this long tradition.
The knife is free of varnish and therefore absorbs water. To clean, wash with a soft sponge and air dry. Not dishwasher safe.
The craftsmen continue to use local wood and carve each piece by hand. In addition to the knife and spatula, they make items such as tea trays and incense containers – all from the woodworking methods developed over more than two centuries on the island.
