Sometimes, you really need to grab a ticket, a magazine or a wallet without your bag fighting you. That's exactly why totes were made. Two straps. Open top with simple snap closure. No buckles, buttons, or zippers. Get in there. Get in there, and get on your way.
This tote is a world apart from the regular canvas standard. Every inch of it is handcrafted: from the cutting and sewing of the canvas, to the tanning of the leather, to the hand painted straps.
A husband and wife team, tucked in a workshop in the hills of the Saitama region of Japan, oversee every step of the process of creating these unique bags. Previously, the pair crafted equestrian products for the racehorse industry—an industry where sturdiness and finish are essential to an acceptable product. The sturdy canvas, reinforced with soft, supple vegetable tanned cow hide leather, gives the bag a retained shape, making it easy to fill with books and set down conveniently at your side without it toppling over. The straps, which have been hand painted along the sides, are attached to the interior slash and patch pockets with solid brass rivets.
The leather straps and bottom should maintain their beauty and luster for a lifetime. If you happen to set your bag down in a puddle, or the leather begins to collect dirt, simply wipe off with a damp cloth.
Like all waxed canvas, the natural development of kinks, scars and marks will develop and become part of the character and patina of the bag.
This tote bag is handcrafted in a tiny workshop in the Saitama region of Japan, by husband and wife team Manabu and Keiko. As designers, they earned their oats working in a factory making equipment for the racehorse industry, where they became familiar with the sturdy canvas and leather they now use to make their own designs.
Wanting to make a bag that was both strong and aesthetically unique, they put a lot of focus on the details. Working side by side, Manabu and Keiko chose the vegetable-tanned cow hide for its strength. They selected thicker #9 canvas for the interior slash and patch pockets because it would help the bag stand up and hold heavier accessories, and lighter #11 canvas for the exterior to make the bag more flexible. The choice to use waxed canvas meant the bag could go anywhere, and stand up to weather and spills. Lastly, hand painting the strap edges with a black leather paint would protect the edges from wear.
The 10" leather straps are attached to the interior slash and patch pockets with solid brass rivets, and the inside pockets are just the right size for sliding in an iPad. The bag's easy-open top and retained shape make it ideal for the daily commute. You won't have to fuss with buckles and straps when you want to quickly put something in or out, and you can set it down at your side without it toppling over.
