Cutting with Dovo scissors is graceful and satisfying, and the broad, seven-inch blades are designed for versatility. They’re just as good for cutting a collage as they are for prying open a postal package or snipping the stems from a bouquet of dahlias. The tasks may seem humble, but the scissors have a noble provenance. Made in Solingen, Germany, the scissors are subject to a 1938 decree issued by the city that makes it illegal to associate with the name “Solingen” without meeting the city’s standards of materials and manufacture. Dovo is one of only five companies allowed this accolade, and they pride themselves in exceeding Solingen’s already high standards. Solingen has been known for their blades since they were making swords and daggers in the 1500s. The reputation for making the sharpest things best was built over centuries, and the knowledge carries over to the razors, paring knives and scissors of today.
Quality scissors should keep their full sharpness for at least a year after purchase and any necessary sharpening or repair should be done by a professional. While Dovo scissors can be shipped to the factory in Solingen, Germany, for care or repair, a reputable local service can also be used. As quaint as a neighborhood truck seems, Dovo stresses that you should never trust your scissors to these roving knife sharpeners. If you're in Los Angeles (or willing to mail your scissors there) Dovo recommends Ross Cutlery. Ross strives to sharpen knives and scissors so the edge lasts longer than they did after their original purchase. An occasional drop of household oil between the blades near the joining screw also helps keep the scissors functioning properly.
The manufacture is a multi-step, hands-on project that starts with a cropped sheet of steel. Scissors blanks are punched out, and the metal silhouettes are carefully formed and hardened, before being ground and sharpened to an edge, then finished with a good buff and polish.
