Finding just the right winter hat is an effort, and one you should only have to make once. To find one that keeps you warm, that stays on your head against the brutally chilly wind, and that covers up the tips of your ears, those vulnerable accessories, should not send you to the far reaches of the earth, nor to the grocery store for a dollar import. One of the earliest Mackinaw Hats. Great Depression. Image courtesy of US National Archives. This wool hat brings it all together. Evolved over a hundred years ago from a traditional baseball cap, it was a solution for not only the cold, but the winter winds that laid claim over one too many flapped hats. The six paneled design has the traditional "bill" or brim for protecting eyes from the sun, and a wool tie top visor that slides down to protect your ears. The wool outer wicks away moisture, and the inner cotton lining provides a bastion of warmth and softness against your head.
The hat shouldn't require much care, but if you want to clean it, make sure to get it dry cleaned. To fit the hat properly, first measure your head. Really, just take a loose measuring tape and wrap it around the top part of your head. The hats are sized in inches, so be sure to choose one that will fit snug for maximum warmth. To use the ear flaps, put the hat on and pull down on the flap just above where your ears are.
This cap was first developed over a hundred years ago when a semi-pro baseball player asked his seamstress wife to make him a hat that wouldn't blow off so easily in the wind. She redesigned his cap and fastened a tie to the top of the visor so it could be tightened to fit snugly around his ears. Since then, the cap has taken on new materials and designs. This one is made of globally sourced wool, and is completely hand-crafted in the U.S.A.
