Burgon & Ball began manufacturing their steel sheep shears in the early eighteenth century in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England’s heartland of industry. These exceptionally sharp, reliable shears were made to be used when shearing sheep by hand the traditional way, the type of work that calls for a steady hand, cool head, and a sturdy, reliable tool. Increasingly popular with wool producers and carrying a well-earned reputation for excellence, this storied company would grow to be the largest manufacturer of these shears in the world. Today, the Burgon & Ball name remains a hallmark of British quality standards. Modelled after the classic design that brought this company such global acclaim, these durable garden shears have been developed in particular for use in lawn and hedge work. The patented blade grinding process, precision heat treatment, and hand setting of each blade allow for careful detailing and trimming of grasses, soft shrubs and new growth. A “double bow” handle pattern means only the softest squeeze is necessary to open and close the shears, relieving your hand of unnecessary strain.
These shears have a variety of gardening uses, including dead-heading, grass clipping, foliage trimming and topiary. They are ideal for all sorts of precise work but should not be used with hard growth, as they are designed for cutting soft materials. To maintain their cutting edge, wipe the blades clean with a lightly oiled cloth after each use. When not using the shears, secure the blades shut using the provided clip for storage. Burgon & Ball are passionate about quality. To ensure your satisfaction, these shears are covered by a full 5 year guarantee against any manufacturing defect.
Burgon & Ball have been manufacturing sheep shears since 1730 on the banks of the River Loxley in Sheffield, England, where their works stand on the site of a cutlery grinding wheel which had existed since the 1690's. Here, metalworking skills have been passed down from generation to generation. The design and production methods of these shears, involving over twenty individual hand operations, has changed little over the last hundred years. When it comes to steel, the key to hardness is a high carbon content and precisely controlled heat treatment where the metal is heated to an exact temperature for a specific time. The downside of hardness is brittleness so the metal is then 'tempered' in hot salts to increase it's shock resistance. In these shears, a perfect balance has been struck between these two essential qualities.
