John Boultbee Brooks established his business selling horse harnesses and other leather goods in Birmingham, England in 1865. Though his company flourished, Brooks’ own steed soon met an untimely end, leaving a borrowed bicycle as his primary mode of transportation. Though he was fascinated by the possibilities of this exciting machine, he was less than pleased with its uncomfortable wooden seat. As a solution, Brooks began crafting his own version of the bicycle saddle in the same leather he used for his harnesses. Since filing its first leather saddle patent in 1882, the Brooks company has grown to encompass a wide range of quality handcrafted leather goods for both the professional and the everyday cyclist. Alongside the saddle and the pedal, the grip is one of the most important and intimate areas of contact between a rider and his or her bicycle. The aluminum shell of these sturdy, slender grips are wrapped in vegetable-tanned leather and cork, offering a stylish alternative to traditional handlebar tape. Over time, these handles will conform and adapt to your unique hold, offering a feeling of security and familiarity particular to their thick, natural leather casings.
A wonderful addition to your favorite cycle, these grips are easy to install following the included set of simple instructions. As with any quality leather product, it is important to protect these grips from damaging elements like rain and moisture. In the event that the leather and cork tape should need replacing, the steel clamps which hold these strips in place can be removed with ease.
At Brooks, traditional leather working techniques and manufacturing skills are passed down from generation to generation. At the Brooks factory in Italy, the aluminum shell of each grip is formed and then wrapped by hand in highest quality leather and cork bands. Finally, the steel clamps that secure the tape the the frame are fitted and tightened for optimum strength and longevity.
