Growing up, my favorite tool in the kitchen was always our flour sifter. It’s been in my family’s kitchen for as long as I can remember, and, as a kid, it was always the part of baking I was in charge of. I was more than willing to let my mom take care of measuring the ingredients, cracking the eggs, and cleaning up after. But, I was always the one responsible for sifting.
While sifting is what initially pulled me into the kitchen—it is like making snow fall over the bowl, after all—as the years went on, this task took the back seat. In fact, what I remember most from these baking adventures isn’t the flour at all, rather it’s spending time with my mom creating sweets together. A few times a year, we still make cookies, and we even still use that same sifter, but now I’ll let other people use it. I’m just glad to have time with the family (and a homemade tasty treat). But, I’m thankful to that flour sifter for starting our baking tradition.
That’s part of what makes heirloom goods special. They help you create traditions. I like to think that even without that trusty sifter, I still would have started baking with my mom, but I’m not totally sure that’s true. That’s the beauty in these traditions and items. They give you a reason to make memories with the people who matter to you. It could be a book passed down and read together or garden tools that help get you out into the soil. Either way, what will stick with you most is the experience being around people you love.
