KM original 8

The original 8. (Clockwise from top left: J.R. Liggett’s shampoo bar; Estwing leather handle claw hammer; Weck canning jars; wool-lined deerskin work gloves; Chemex hand-blown coffee maker; Skidmore’s beeswax wood care & finish; Haws watering can).

While prepping for KM’s fifth birthday, I went back into our system to find the very first order from our very first customer, Mark McCorkle. I wondered if Mark had bought anything else from us since purchasing the Estwing hammer. He had – many times over the last few years. So I decided to reach out to him. A writer and producer at Walt Disney TV Animation, Mark lives in Burbank, California, with his wife, Stephanie, two kids, Molly and Sam, four dogs and a household of Kaufmann products.

So, how did you hear about us?
Kaufmann came up on my radar around the same time that other blogs and websites were starting to look really good for the first time – a new wave of websites that suddenly had a nice design and a clean look. I’m not sure which website it was exactly, but most likely A Continuous Lean and Aaron Draplin’s site, Draplin Design Co.

What was your initial impression?
I was immediately drawn to Kaufmann’s good design, warm appeal and clean logo. Your website was the online version of a shop I would want to walk into. It felt like an actual experience rather than a mechanized storefront that just fed me products. Basically Kaufmann was a neighborhood shop, online – like your local cheese shop or bookstore – rather than a place that just undercuts prices and gets you out of there as fast as possible.

Are there any products you’d like us to carry?
I prefer you to be the one picking the products. Otherwise it’s like telling a musician what song to play. I trust you to source the right stuff, and I know that whatever I find on your site I won’t be able to find anywhere else. Whenever I come back to your site there are always new things. There’s an element of surprise and discovery. Almost all the products I’ve bought from you I’ve purchased for myself. Ha!

To celebrate our fifth birthday, we’re giving away five unique gifts over the next five weeks. Join the party! Find out more here.
