CURATED BY...Carol Devine & Wendy Trusler

In 1996, writer Carol Devine and artist/chef Wendy Trusler spearheaded a volunteer clean-up mission at a Russian research station off the coast of Antarctica. Their photos, recipes and journal entries are collected in the forthcoming volume The Antarctic Book of Cooking and Cleaning (Harper Design). We fully subscribe to the timeless tips within, like how to do more with less and always leave a lighter footprint. Below, Devine and Trusler share their favorite picks from our shop and beyond.

I like to wrap gifts, especially any baked goods, in canvas and twine from my studio. Why not make one of these handmade, reusable bags part of the package?

WATERPROOF WAXED CANVAS LUNCH BAGS
$48

I adore this brass pocket compass because I’m obsessed with magnetism. Compasses give wanderers direction, as the needle aligns itself and points to the top of the Earth’s magnetic field. I’d take this one glacier hiking.

Our Inspiration

“Experiencing and observing nature helps us to live better: The natural abilities of plants and animals inspire the greatest innovations, and being in the wilderness is a salve in our increasingly fast-paced and urbanized environments.”

Smart and beautifully crafted, I’d make this piece a kitchen focal point for drying herbs and flowers alongside my tea towels, and maybe hang a few baskets, too.

Our Tip of the Trade

“We encourage people to make a home wherever you are, even if it’s a temporary landing. Live lightly but be comfortable. Discover what you truly need. What can you make, borrow or find?”

Twenty years after going on the clean-up mission, we're still proud of what the group accomplished.
