CURATED BY...Brook Klausing

The son of a parks department worker, Brook Klausing spent many of his days immersed in nature while growing up in Kentucky. The Brooklyn-based landscape artist still gets to play outside while running his firm Brook Landscape, taking a wabi sabi approach to creating outdoor spaces that are grounded in his love for simply letting things be. Below, Brook shares his favorite finds from our shop and beyond.

This is a great tool for tasks like digging out old root balls when replacing perennials and annuals. The serrated edge also lets you make a clean cut through roots. It’s small enough to fit in your back pocket, too.

When you’re working outdoors all day, sunglasses are a must. Plus, safety glasses can be a bit ugly without nice lenses.

I would pot interior small specimen plants, like jade, in this crock. The drainage hole makes for easier watering without root rot.

My Favorite Gift

“When I’m the one gifting, I love to give a bottle of Woodford Reserve—it's the best of the bourbons. I may be partial because the distillery is near where I grew up.”

I love this book and flip through it often for inspiration.

Visible | Invisible: Landscape Works of Reed Hilderbrand

A cast-iron fire bowl brings the transitional feel of the ocean to a small space. There’s something hypnotic about a fire—people can stare at a flame for hours—and I like that this one doesn’t use a gel.

This cotton twine is super handy around the garden for everything from training vines to tying up burlap when you need to transplant a larger shrub. It even looks great for wrapping up gifts.

My Inspiration

“I find inspiration through traveling. On a trip, it’s hard to walk anywhere without snapping a photo or noticing a detail. Nothing beats experiencing environments for yourself.”

Who doesn’t need a handsome BBQ set?

I always carry a grid-style notebook for sketching layouts and design and quick ideas for discussion. It also helps me remember my material list when I go shopping.

My Tip of the Trade

“When designing a space, leave it low and open in the middle. Use trees and shrubs as sculptural architecture then layer with perennials and annuals. There are no wrong answers, just better decisions.”

It’s easy to forget the time while you’re gardening and digging into the soil—which is a blessing and a curse! I love a rustic watch that looks solid.

It’s good to always keep extra seating around for guests. These compact, waxed canvas stools can be stored outside without cluttering your space when you’re not hosting.

I keep a few nice throws up on my rooftop space so guests can stay warm on a chilly night without having to go back inside to find a blanket or sweater.

My Signature

“Perfection is nothing more than a pursuit. You can't fix everything, and trying to do so will make you look like a dog chasing its tail. Instead, design with the goal of perfectly imperfect. A good designer friend asked me something that has stuck in my head: Is it essential and necessary? When it comes to designing objects or space, that question will help you edit out the details you need not chase.”

This tool is made for artistic work. It’s lightweight, flexible and perfect for precision cuts, like carving out notches on lumber or driftwood.

The lead planter is hand-cast in England and is a really bold piece. It weighs a ton! Definitely better for the ground floor rather than a rooftop.

I have a screwdriver necklace and, like this one, it’s super useful when you don’t have pockets. The maker, In God We Trust, did a wonderful job with the chain and mount detail. I love functional jewelry.
