Rotating knurl lets you sharpen to three types of pencil points. This sharpener is built like a bullet with heavy brass and a stainless steel blade. Comes in a leather case. Made in Germany. (
Durable, functional and weighted like a bullet, this brass sharpener earns its keep with minimal effort. Little more than a rotating brass knurl, a sharp blade, a couple of screws and a sculpted hunk of solid brass, it manages to do more with less. A turn of the knurl produces three kinds of points: a sharp one for fine and precise lines, a medium one for letter-writing, and a rounded one for sketching and shading.
Faced with the dilemma of different pencil-sharpness needs for different tasks, a group of German engineers in the 1950s developed this functional, no-nonsense tool. It was the first of its kind, and is produced by Dux, a company that’s been making pencil sharpeners out of their German factory for a hundred years.
Made out of brass and stainless steel blades, the round knurl at one end of the sharpener is turned to tighten or loosen the blade’s grip on the pencil tip, resulting in a sharp, average or blunt point.
Decide if you are in the mood for a soft sketch, a quick scribbling down of a to-do list, or a tersely worded note (each have their own level of sharpness). Turn the knurl once to the right to make the tip of your pencil more or less sharp. Insert pencil into sharpener and turn clockwise, creating a neat little pile of pencil shavings on your desk.
If a little bit of lead gets stuck in the tip of the sharpener, not to worry. Tap the sharpener on the edge of your desk to shake out the former pencil points.
The Dux brass sharpener needs very little care. One can wipe clean with a paper towel occasionally. Store it in its little leather case for safekeeping.
Dux was established in 1908, and for the next 50 or so years was on the forefront of the pencil industry back then, everyone used them, not just carpenters and students. The design of the brass sharpener is simple and efficient: just a knurl, a couple screws and a steel blade. The family-run company still produces and manufactures all of its sharpeners out of their factory in Germany.
