Since 2010 Doug Johnston, a master of the arts, has focused on a process of coiling and stitching rope into a variety of objects including bags, baskets, sculptural vessels, wearable art and furniture. By employing some of the oldest forms of basket weaving and ceramics – using only sewing thread and raw cotton rope – he creates a clean, modern aesthetic. Every item is made in his Brooklyn studio on a small fleet of vintage industrial sewing machines and produced using cotton cord that is manufactured in the USA.
