why this product

Brushing your hair with wooden bristles gently massages the scalp, increasing the circulation and sending tingles down the spine. The bristles carry the hair’s natural oils from root to tip, the wood being a natural absorber and redistributor. Since wood doesn’t carry electricity, your hair will be static-free, not looking like a frantic crazy person or Phil Spector on those cold winter months. The wooden bristles and the handle are handmade in Italy form Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood. Widu means wood in Old English. A hairstylist in Milan invented the product to soothe the scalps and untangle the hairsprayed, blowdried, overworked and broken ends of the hair he worked with every day. The wood used in the bristles is hornbeam, a variety of birchwood found in Europe. It’s the same wood used in the pegs holding together giant windmills — which are known for their strength. It would take a knot of epic proportions to cause a Widu bristle to snap.

use & care

Note that the tiny hole in the rubber at the base of the brush bed isn't a missing bristle, but a little ventilating hole to let air get in and out of the pneumatic pocket. This little hole softens the pocket just enough to make brushing your locks a perfectly unaggressive experience. To clean, rinse with soap and water and wipe off with a clean towel. Don't soak the brush in water as this could warp the wood. Leaving it in the shower over time could likely have the same warping results. The Widu brush comes with 5 extra bristles, should a really bad knot snap one in half. Just pull out the broken one with some pliers and wiggle in a new little guy.  Feel free to use this with a blow dryer, the brush won't get hot.

production & design

The round Widu brush comes in two sizes: small and large. Choose a size depending on how much hair you have and how long it is, though the smaller brush is more compact for putting in your handbag. Oval brushes are good if you want to keep your hair bouncy and wavy, leaving a little natural texture in depending on hair type. The sustainable wood is Forest Stewardship Council-certified and the brushes made by hand in Italy. The wood bases are finished naturally with purified linseed oil and beeswax, getting into the woods pores and keeping it beautiful.
