why this product

This thermometer has been enameled and fired twice, a method developed over a century ago that creates long-lasting, rust resistant enamelware. The glass tube is filled with a red tinted alcohol, and the units and measures have been fired on with indelible black enamel. A French company has been making these thermometers since the 1970s with no alteration to the design or production.

use & care

The small die-cut hole at the top of the thermometer accommodates a screw so that you can secure it to your front porch or backyard deck. Rubber screws are recommended so as not to crack or damage the enamel. If using a metal screw, do not over-tighten.  Hang the thermometer in a shaded area to better gauge ambient temperature. If the temperature exceeds 50 °C (122 °F), the glass tube may burst. Since it is filled with quickly absorbing alcohol, and not mercury, there is no danger of poisoning or toxicity.  When desired, clean the thermometer with a household bleaching agent.

production & design

Large steel sheets are put through a metal cutting press to create the body of the thermometer. The steel pieces are then rinsed in alcohol and water before the application of an overall layer of clear enamel. Another layer of white enamel is applied onto the front, then fired at 860 °C, affixing the enamel and giving the thermometer its glossy finish.  The numbers and units are printed on with black enamel paint before being fired again to create an indelible imprint. Glass tubes with colored alcohol are mounted at the top and bottom by hand. A zinc metal piece protects the glass tube at the bottom.
